Ionic compounds form when oppositely-charged ions are attracted to each other strongly enough to form ionic bonds. They are electrically-neutral, as the charges of the ions cancel each other out.
We need to know how to write the ionic formula for a compound from the symbol (and charge) of the ions it is made up from.
Ionic formulae are ratios of the ions in the compound. There is not such thing as, for example, a NaCl particle. It is made of of millions and millions of sodium and chloride ions in a 1:1 ratio.
