The Periodic Table of Elements

The Periodic Table of Elements is a fantastic tools for Chemists. If we know how to use it, we do not have to remember quite so many minor details - we can work them out from the Periodic Table instead! The Columns (Groups) tell us the number of valence (outermost) electrons. These are the electrons that give each element its chemical reactions and properties, so that is a very useful thing to be able to work out. The Rows (Periods) tell us how many electron shells an atom has its electrons in. That will be more useful in Year 13 and beyond. However, it makes for a good "check" that you have written electron arrangements correctly. The relative atomic mass number tells us if an element has isotopes or not, but does not help chemists a lot with the reactions and properties of an element. We do use this value to do a lot of calculations in Chemistry, so know where to find on a Periodic Table.

Mole Calculations

MOLAR MASS Before we can use the mole in any calculations, we need to know about molar mass . We met this earlier, looking at the mass of atoms. It is usually called relative atomic mass in that context. When we use these values off the Periodic Table of Elements for a molecule or compound, we call it relative molar mass . We add up the relative atomic mass of every atom in the compound/molecule to find the relative molar mass. CALCULATIONS Once we have a balanced equation for a chemical reaction, and know the mass of one of the reactants (or products), we can find the mass of everything else in that reaction/equation. The Mole

Why do we bother to balance equations? Balanced equations allow us to make predictions, determine how much reagent to use, and know how much product will be made. But to do any of these, we need to know what the numbers in the equation actually mean. The numbers in an equation represent amount ( n ). The unit for this is called the mole . We use this unit because it represents a huge number of particles - approximately 600000000000000000000000!!! One atom (or molecule or compound...) in an equation represents one mole of that particle. We seldom have exactly one mole of anything reacting, so we need to know how to work with ratios to work out the exact amount of everything in an equation (you will always know the amount of at least one reagent or product). We will spend this week exploring calculations regarding the mole (amount).
