Identifying Anions

In this assessment, we need to be able to:

  • use a flow chart (and experiment observations) to identify an ionic compound (anion and cation)
  • use solubility rules to justify our choice of ion(s)
  • write balanced equations for all reactions that occur
  • discuss the potential source and environmental impacts of one of the identified ions on consumers of that water source

ALKKALINE IONS

HYDROXIDES

 CARBONATES

OTHER ANIONS

SULFATES

HALIDES (Chloride or Iodide Only)

NITRATES

If none of these tests get a positive result, the anion is nitrate.
